To Alter Or To Abolish

Book Review Notes

Listed below are some things to keep in mind specific to my book. Thanks again for your interest and cooperation.

I try to avoid reifications. Therefore, I purposely use some redundant-sounding terms, such as “Supreme Court justices,” “congressional legislators,” “society of people,” “community of people,” “process of government.” I want people to realize that human problems are caused by humans, not things. I want to encourage readers not to reify. Thus, know that I purposely meant to write those phrases. Please do not change those phrases. I discuss the problems of reification in Chapter 6, Society. By using redundant-sounding terms I am trying to remind readers that I am discussing topics as objectively as possible, not subjectively. If anything, watch for when I reify so I can revise my text.

By repeatedly writing “process of government” I am reminding people that I am distinguishing a descriptive process from something called statism or “the state.” In my book I purposely distinguish between the natural process of government (Chapter 13) and the philosophy of statism (Chapter 22). When you read the word government, I should be describing a process, not statism.

In Chapter 21 (Captured Labor) I distinguish a difference between “the political means” and “the economic means” of satisfying needs and wants. The terms are not original but derived from sociologist Franz Oppenheimer, in his treatise “The State.” Thus, the prefix article “the” is important when I use those terms because I am using narrowly defined meanings. I realize when you delete the word “the” you might be editorializing by thinking in more generic and global terms, but I need the word “the” because the terms are defined to hold a narrow and specific meaning. I am not disagreeing with you, just letting you know I am purposeful when I prefix those terms with “the.”

I provide many of my own definitions. If you do not like the way I used those words then explain why, but keep in mind that any debates you want to have with me must work within the definitions I provided. Also, keep in mind that I am proposing a new thesis about human interaction and therefore, my definitions take on narrowly defined purposes. For example, I provide my own definitions for trespass, crime, vice, justice, restitution, etc.

Finis.
